Reading to Your Dog

by Candace Sampson

My oldest daughter caught onto reading very young and has developed a deep love for it. My youngest was a little harder to engage. We started to encourage her to read to our dog after reading several studies that show that kids literacy improved after reading to their pets. It’s paying off. Her reading is improving and we have to ask her less frequently to pick up a book. We can’t say the dog has developed the same love of reading that she has.

At first she has an captive, non-judgey audience.
It's not long though before the dog is like "When the frig is this book going to end?"

Looks like that book’s been read often….it’s all dog eared. Get it? Bahahahaha! Sorry. That’s the best I can do. Ruff day today. Sick kid at home. Bad cough — he has developed a nasty bark. Ok, I’ll stop now.

Thank you for this. I didn’t know that reading to a pet can help encourage reading! But not only did you teach me something new, you also gave me a good laugh! I almost spit my drink all over my computer when I saw that last picture. Priceless!

I love that picture too. Always cracks me up. Sometimes I think my dog is human.

Love it.  He’s practically rolling his eyes….
“Enough already, sweetheart. Get me outta here.  Let’s go for a walk!”

Some day Pam, that dog is going to talk and then write a book about this family LOL
