Indian Food, My Love Affair Continues

by Candace Sampson

Almost two years ago, I tested the waters and made Indian food at home for the first time. My husband has always been a big lover of Indian food so I felt it was only fair that I give it a honest go. From that first Butter Chicken I made, to today, I’ve come a long way and I’m happy to say that the more I try, the more I fall in love with Indian food.

This month, Patak’s asked the Patak’s Moms to go out for dinner. Related: This is the best ambassadorship ever. Alright, I’ll go out and let someone else do the cooking.

We had a couple of Indian restaurants we were regulars at but we kept hearing amazing things about Coconut Lagoon on St. Laurent in Ottawa. Since this journey for me is all about trying new things, we decided to give it a try.

Coconut Lagoon may have ruined me for all other Indian restaurants. While over-eating is not generally my thing, I was close to licking my plate at the end. I’m not even kidding. So what did we have? Well, my girls started out with Mango Lassis, which my the way, I’ll be making at home as soon as I get my hands on some cardamom. They were absolutely delicious. For appetizers we had an order of Onion Fritters and Chicken Pakora. For mains, we had the Kozhi Curry, Butter Chicken and Mushroom Curry, with sides of rice and Porathas. We ended the meal with Mango Ice Cream, Madras coffee and Chai. And this is where I had to be practically rolled to the car. This was one of the best meals I’ve ever had, Indian or otherwise.

So, what’s the end result of going out and trying new Indian Food? Well, today I’m obsessing about making the Mushroom Curry we had last night, in addition to the Mango Lassi’s. I’ve found a fabulous restaurant we’ll be returning to again and again, and I’m feeling like I’ll be whipping out more of my Patak’s sauces soon and mixing in a little India more frequently.

Thank you Patak’s for a wonderful meal.
