Little MissMatched

by Candace Sampson

My youngest daughter came into the kitchen this morning and it looked like an rainbow had attacked her in her bedroom. She had on sports socks, leggings, a ruffled top, a poncho and a plaid kilt. And what was my first instinct? My first instinct was to go back to her room and help her pick out something that matches. But I didn’t. I haven’t commented or said anything for quite sometime on her choices because I’ve learned to quiet anal, matchy-matchy me and embrace the fashion confusion that is my 7 year old.

So I grabbed my phone and took a picture to send to her Dad and it’s funny how when you look through a lens everything looks so different. She wasn’t a fashion disaster after all, but a confident, adorable 7 year old. How could I have seen anything less?

Gad I miss those days now that Maddie is 21. So lucky to have a granddaughter cause this time I can be really really present as she grows before my eyes.

My 5 year old does the same sort of thing. So long as she’s covered up and warm enough, I don’t actually care what colours she wears. Of course, my hubby is colour blind, so there’s never any arguement from him and my wardrobe consists of jeans, t-shirts and sweatshirts, so who am I to give fashion advice?

I think this is what my mother loves too about having granddaughters. The opportunity to marvel at their childhood instead of being up to her elbows raising them. Enjoy!

I have to admit, I seriously love that you came by and commented. My daughter was tickled that you left her a comment and is wondering if you’re in need of a model LOL

I love how kids really could care less what we think of their wardrobe choices.

My daughter 7, does the same. Christmas socks with purple, star printer leggings and a plaid top. Sometimes the outfits she comes out of her room with are beyond words. But I too say nothing for ther most part. They have so little control over so many areas of their lives I feel this is one battle I don’t want to pick. And frankly, I am glad that she is wearing what she wants and is being herself, at school, amongst friends and at home. I hope she continues to do so. It makes me proud of her.
