Boozy Sangria Recipe: Bold, Fruity, and Sneakily Strong

by Candace Sampson
Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

If you’re here, you’re on the hunt for a strong sangria, something with real bite. None of that diluted wine they serve at restaurants for you. You want amplification. A boozy sangria recipe that makes your toes curl in the most delightful way. So, bookmark this one now, because once you try it, you’ll be making it on repeat all summer long.

Boozy Sangria Recipe ingredients

This classic red wine sangria has been my ride or die for over a decade. The recipe has been tweaked over the years, less sugar, better photos, a deeper appreciation for what rum and Cointreau actually do to a pitcher of wine, but the bones have never changed. It’s bold, it’s fruity, and it is sneakily strong.

This is not, I repeat NOT, a tame sangria recipe. It sneaks up on you, which is exactly the point. Make it a day in advance to let the flavours develop, give it a good stir before serving, and pour over ice. If you want to stretch it a little further, a splash of sparkling water does the trick without killing the vibe.

Pro Tips From Over a Decade of Making This Boozy Sangria Recipe:

  • The fruit is the motherlode. It absorbs a lot of booze. Consider it your daily serving.
  • Reuse the fruit. If you’re making a second batch within a day or two, toss that alcohol-soaked fruit back in. Waste not.
  • Go cheap. Seriously. Cheap wine, cheap rum, cheap orange liqueur. You won’t notice once it’s all mixed. I usually use Jackson-Triggs Merlot, but any affordable Cabernet Sauvignon or red blend works beautifully. Save the good stuff for drinking on its own.
  • Get the box. If you make it once, you’ll want it again. Save yourself the extra trip.
  • Scale it up. Double, triple, quadruple — this one’s made for a crowd.

Want Something Colder?

Same great sangria energy, just frozen. These adult slushies are made for hot patios and long weekends when a pitcher just isn’t going to cut it.

Why This Boozy Sangria Recipe Is Stronger Than You Think

Most restaurant sangria is wine with a splash of juice and some tired fruit floating in it. This is not that. A cup and a half of rum or vodka plus Cointreau added to a full bottle of wine means you’re essentially splitting the drink between two types of alcohol, which is why the overnight sit matters so much — the flavours mellow and marry, but the strength doesn’t go anywhere.

Boozy sangria recipe

To put it plainly: a generous pour of this sangria is roughly equivalent to two drinks. The fruit makes it taste like juice. That is the trap. Pour accordingly, especially if you’re serving people who think they don’t like sangria.

If you want to dial it back, halve the spirits and add a splash more orange juice. If you want to lean in, use dark rum instead of light. Either way, make it the day before and let it do its thing overnight.

So, without further ado, here’s the recipe for classic sangria, loaded with booze, fruit and wine. Enjoy!

OMG! I glass of this and I would be passed out under a patio table somewhere! But I like that it’s healthy with all that fruit in it.

That’s where you add some sparkling water to it. At least then you could have two glasses 😉

Soo, I learned this from a wine tour that we just did in Spain.. Sangria was originally made up to help disguise / reflavour bad wine. If that last batch or bottle didn’t turn out so well… Sangria it up!

Which is why you should always buy cheap wine when making Sangria. Ole. 🙂

Add some banana liqueur to that, and you’re golden. 😉

LOL!!! Hi Susie *waving* Did you share with your neighbour? You know what else is great about this recipe? It’s actually hangover resistant. Seriously. My friend and I in Ottawa have noticed this recently. We’re convinced it’s magic 🙂 So glad you popped by my site. I’ll post the other one tomorrow for you:)

Love your site and visit often! I will make both Sangria recipes to share with “my neighbour ” and then we will test your theory of hangover resistance! 😉

So, I had every intention of trying one of your sangria recipes this weekend, and alas…when I got home realized I had half the ingredients for one, half for the other.  Therefore in my fridge, fermenting as I type, is the Loosey Goosey Boozy Boozy Very Berry Sangria.  Will let you know on Sunday how I make out:)

HANGOVER RESISTANT?  This is my biggest obstacle to drinking.  I gotta try some sangria, been pinning recipes.  MUST TO MAKE, MUST TO DRINK.  ; )

I have the pineapple, but geez that is quite a bit of booze. Will ask hubby if he will drink it with me before I buy the liquor otherwise I would be quite smashed, but I am apparently quite funny when tipsy.

OMG I’m drooling over here. I love sangria almost as much as I love mojitos in the summer! Going to be making this one forsure.

Why Oh Why, have I never made this?! Looks perfect for the summer 🙂 I am a sucker foe beer and pink lemonade. TRY IT!

This looks so good! I’m Sangria addicted since my family went on a bus trip through Southern Spain about eight years ago – I love it! I’m more partial to the red sangria, like you – and have only had ONE white wine sangria that I liked – a dry chardonnay, peaches and lime…yummy. Red ones are still my favourite though! Where did you get that awesome jug? I so want one!
