Blueberry Date Smoothie: Your New Morning Obsession

by Candace Sampson
Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

(Updated April 2025 – same delicious smoothie, new favourite status) This blueberry date smoothie came together by accident during one of those “use what you’ve got” mornings, and it turned out to be chef’s kiss. Naturally sweet from dates and loaded with fibre, this blueberry date smoothie has become my go-to breakfast when I need something quick, filling, and not full of junk. It’s five ingredients, no nonsense, and a sneaky way to feel like you’ve got your life together by 9 a.m.

Why You’ll Love This Smoothie

  • Naturally sweet—no added sugar, just fruit doing its job
  • High in fibre (thank you, dates!) so you stay full longer
  • Easy to prep ahead or blend on the fly
  • Kid-friendly and surprisingly rich
  • Can be made dairy-free or vegan-friendly with a few swaps

But beyond all that, let’s talk about what makes each ingredient work overtime for your health and your tastebuds:

Ingredient Highlights

Blueberries
These little purple powerhouses are loaded with antioxidants to help your body fight off inflammation and stay sharp. They’re also a solid source of Vitamin C and brain-boosting benefits—which, let’s be honest, we could all use more of.

Medjool Dates
These chewy gems are packed with natural sugar that gives you real energy (without the crash). Plus, they’re rich in Vitamin B6, which helps with—you guessed it—brain function. Also? They make this smoothie taste like dessert.

Spinach
I’ll die on this hill: spinach belongs in every smoothie. You won’t taste it, but your body will thank you. It’s full of Vitamin K for bone health, iron for energy, and antioxidants that play nice with the Vitamin C in those blueberries—hello, nutrient synergy.

Flax + Chia Seeds
Can’t decide between them? Don’t. Use both. They’re rich in Omega-3s, help with digestion, and keep you feeling full. Plus, they add that satisfying smoothie texture without turning it gritty. Win-win.

Protein Powder
This is your long-haul fuel. Add whatever works for you—whey, pea, soy, egg white—and adjust based on what your body needs or what’s in your pantry. If you’re not sure, a quick chat with someone at your local health food store can steer you right.

And just to be clear: yes, it really is that delicious. The best part about this smoothie is knowing you’re getting all these nutritional benefits while sipping on something that tastes like a treat. It’s indulgence without the guilt.

Easy Substitutions

  • No dates? Try a banana, a spoonful of honey, or 2–3 soaked prunes
  • No blueberries? Any frozen berries work—raspberries, strawberries, or a mix
  • Want it creamier? Add Greek yogurt or a splash of coconut milk
  • Vegan? Use almond, oat, or soy milk instead of dairy

FAQ: Blueberry Date Smoothie

Can I make this smoothie without a high-speed blender?
Yes! Just soak the dates in warm water for 10–15 minutes before blending to soften them up. This helps even basic blenders do the job smoothly.

Is this smoothie good for kids?
Absolutely. It’s naturally sweet, full of fibre, and doesn’t taste “too healthy” (you know what I mean). Great for breakfast or an after-school snack.

Can I prep this in advance?
Yes. You can portion everything into freezer bags and dump into your blender when you’re ready. Or make the smoothie and keep it in the fridge for up to 24 hours—just give it a shake before serving.

Hi Sheryl, No just plain protein powder works here. The dates and the blueberries give it all the flavour it needs. Let me know what you think!

This looks amazing. All we have is chocolate protein powder (the jock’s). I think I’m going to try it with that and see what happens.

I’m so sorry, I don’t. I made this years ago and never figured it out.
