Far and Away, “Come From Away” is the Best Musical Out There

By //  by Candace Sampson Leave a Comment

Come from Away, currently playing at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa through Broadway Across Canada, tells the true story of how the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, welcomed and supported passengers and crew of planes that were diverted there on September 11, 2001. For 22 years, people around the globe have been inspired by this remarkable tale, but here at home in Canada, we're not only inspired, but proud to claim Newfoundlanders as our own. Canadians are known worldwide for their …

Captain Your Own Ship On The Ultimate Girls’ Trip

By //  by Candace Sampson Leave a Comment

If there was only one thing I could impart to you about vacationing with Le Boat on the Rideau Canal in Canada, it would be this: you can do it. Yes, you. If I, a vertically challenged woman who has wilfully avoided parallel parking for 36 years, can Captain a 50 foot, five bedroom Le Boat houseboat through various locks and waterways on the Rideau Canal over five days, then you, my friend, can do it too. I can already hear your objections from here. Place a checkmark beside each one I get …

Cirque’s VOLTA Is An Exhilarating Treat For All

By //  by Jenn Perry Leave a Comment

In Canada, and across the globe, Cirque du Soleil is a name known for incredible acrobatics, beautiful costumes and enticing storylines. I've had the opportunity to see a couple of their live shows over the years, so I of course jumped at the opportunity to attend the opening night performance of their new show VOLTA, playing in the Capital region for the month of August. When we arrived at the Zibi site in Gatineau, QC (over the Portage Bridge from Ottawa), the massive circus tent was …

Lessons for Life and Catholic Education in Ontario; Why We’re Thankful for Our Kids’ Teachers

By //  by Candace Sampson Leave a Comment

As a child, I grew up across the street from two schools that were separated only by a public pool; one Catholic and one public. As Catholics (but far from practicing), the decision as to what school I would attend was easy for my parents. And so it was, that for eight years I would wait until the morning’s last bell to race out the door and get to school. I always looked fondly back on my time at St. Francis. In my head, I felt certain that part of what I loved about attending it was the …

Why My Daughter is Acing Compassionate Math and Fair Science

By //  by Candace Sampson 1 Comment

This school year has been challenging for my twelve year old daughter. A chronic back injury, has meant she has missed more than 32 days of school since September. We never know when she will be flat on her back for sometimes up to a week, or what will cause her back to spasm. As I write this, she put her back out two days ago, simply walking down the hall at school. Needless, to say, I am stressed to the max about her health, and the impact this is going to have on her long term.  The …
