Crush and Covet: Pretty specs, pottery & bangles

by Candace Sampson

Let’s talk about Mother’s Day.

It’s the one day — ONE DAY, FAMILY! — where all we want is not to pick up the socks you wore during last week’s trail run, or find mouldy food containers at the bottom of a school bag, or discover your hey-this-needs-washing-mom sports jock on top of the clean bras we finally treated ourselves to because the ratty tan ones had to go.

And breathe.

We want pretty, and the flower shaped car deodorizers from the corner gas station don’t count. No way, kids. Time to up the ante. We’ll happily take thoughtful cards and crafts — As long as they’re not made from dried dung. WHAT THE HELL? — and all the kisses and hugs and coffee in bed you want to throw our way. If store bought is more how you roll, kids and husbands, then take a gander at what Life in Pleasantville is crushing on. These will likely win more brownie points with mom than the crushed Mars bar with a bow on top she received last year.

Kelly Williams: “I’ve recently started using an oil diffuser in my house and I absolutely love it. I don’t like the idea of using chemical sprays to make my house smell nice, but I’m totally on board with the idea of using essential oils. I mix and match oils that I think would work nicely together and see what I can come up with. My favourite so far is a combination of lavender, clove bud, and peppermint.”

Robin Edwards: “Have you heard the name Warby Parker yet? If you wear glasses you need to know about this amazing brand of eye wear. Warby Parker believes that buying glasses should be easy and fun, and that it shouldn’t break your budget. They design their own frames in-house and use the best quality materials available to produce fab styles that are modern yet slightly retro. I also love their charitable business model of giving a pair of glasses to someone in need for every pair purchased. This week I am totally crushing on the look of this Upton frame in Sea Smoke Tortoise.”

Kelli Catana: “I’m not one much for jewellery or sentiment but Mother’s Day is my soft spot, probably because I have so many kids. This Kate Spade Mom Idiom Bangle, available in gold or silver, is something I’d love to receive because it contains so many phrases I say on a daily basis including ‘mom said so, sit up straight, say thank you, do your homework, play nice, say please and go play outside.’  It’s also affordable, making it the perfect piece of jewellery to receive from the kids this Mother’s Day.”

Dee Brun: “These are my crush this week. I  love these mugs from Winners HomeSense. They are large and slightly wonky, like handmade pottery… Perfectly imperfect — like me.”

Laureen Farnam: “I promised myself I would drink more water and not be one of the many people walking around dehydrated every day and since receiving this Wide Mouth Bottle (WMB) as a gift I’m one happy, hydrated human.

The SIGG bottle holds a litre of water and that makes getting my daily requirement of H2O a breeze. I have enough water to make it through a long walk or an hour long Zumba class and because of the matte finish on the outside of the bottle I’m not constantly fumbling with it — or dropping it — the way I have in the past with shiny, smooth, slippery-when-wet water bottles. Thanks to the design of the WBM it’s really easy to sip slowly or guzzle like you’re the last one freed from the island. I can even clip it to my backpack for easy access by simply adding a carabiner clip.”
