The Color Run Makes Running Fun

by Candace Sampson

Running is a mental game. It not only requires fitness and endurance but a profound will to go the distance. I, do not possess this mental game. In fact, usually, somewhere around the second kilometre of a run, I’d just as soon walk away and go have a drink somewhere than take another step. I’m a quitter, ok? There. I said it. Quitter. It took a trip to Florida to make running fun for me a couple of years ago.

The truth is that after I ran a Disney race, I sort of gave up on running conventional races. I mean, where were the cute, huggable characters at every mile marker? Why was there no entertainment? I need motivation people. I’m not out here doing this for my health you know. I need a dangling carrot, or in this case, chocolate covered mouse ears waiting for me. Yes, a Disney run ruined me for all other races until The Color Run came into my life.

Who knew being doused in various colours and becoming a human rainbow would make running fun? Apparently Chevrolet Canada did and I’m so happy they invited me to join their team in August in Ottawa. I even managed to coerce new victims, er, I mean runners to join me.

I’m not really sure why being doused with color motivates you to run faster so you can then be doused with another, and another, and yet another. There’s probably some clinical explanation connecting the human psyche and bright vibrant colors together. I however, prefer to look at it from a more simplistic view. It’s just good, clean fun. It’s a great day out. It’s good for a few laughs. It brings family and friends together in a unique setting. It makes running fun. Period.

My merry band of runners is already looking forward to next year’s race. Will I see you there?

*Many thanks to Chevrolet Canada for inviting myself and my daughters to join their team. You made running fun.
