Age, Wisdom & Regrets. How I’m Embracing Aging (sort of)

by Candace Sampson

With age comes wisdom, and a few regrets I’ve come to find out. Barely a day goes by after catching a glimpse of my crow’s feet in a reflection, that I don’t hear my mother say, “You’re going to regret that tan someday!”. Ugh, why are mothers always right?

Not only do I regret this tan, I regret not walking around in a bikini more. I miss this body.

There’s no doubt that my sun-worshipping ways have led to some deeper than normal lines on my face. Add in lack of exercise and a workaholic tendency and I definitely have regrets.

On the flip side, some things, when it comes to aging, are simply out of my control. Case in point; I don’t think I slept through the night for the seven years following the birth of my daughters. Yup, I blame the kids for at least ¼ of my wrinkles. Add in gravity and just plain old growing old and some days it can feel like a losing battle.

Except it’s not a battle. It’s a victory lap and this is where the wisdom comes in.

I’ve come to realize that aging is fun, and it doesn’t have to be a hardship. In fact, now as my daughters are getting older and closer and closer to self-sufficiency, I’ve started to spend more time taking care of myself.

l'oreal revitalift

In a bit of perfect timing, L’Oréal recently sent me their new Revitalift Cicacream to try. The first anti-aging cream recommended by the Canadian Dermatology Association, Cicacream is like a fitness program for my face.

Infused with Centella Asiatica (aka Tiger Grass), a plant from ancient Chinese medicine and used for centuries as one the world’s natural remedies for aging, Revitalift Cicacream feels like silk going on my skin. My skin is typically very dry and I love how it hydrates and plumps up my fine lines. It’s the only time, by the way, that I enjoy using plump in a sentence when it comes to describing my body.

Sigh, my body. That girl in a bikini is long gone, but I marvel at all the amazing things I can still do, like jumping in the water with whale sharks and ATV’ing across the desert. I’ve also found there is comfort in numbers too, so I’ve recently joined a support group to keep me on track when it comes to fitness.

Finally, sleep has become a priority for me now too, since it really does affect how I look the next day. I’ve invested in silk pillowcases, eye-masks and ear plugs to make sure I sleep soundly and undisturbed. More importantly though I’ve found the value in clearing my head before I close my eyes. Every night before bed I take a few minutes to journal, and the same when I wake up.

Have I missed anything? How are you making time to take care of yourself?

    Hi Candice,
I’m currently working on a Diploma in Public Relations from the University of Victoria. This semester’s course requires that I interview a blogger. A writer friend recommended your blog. Now for my request:

If you would like to answer three short questions about blogging, I will need to submit your blog to the professor by Oct. 1 for approval. I would be so grateful if you would allow me to use your blog and your responses in my assignment. Your blog looks lovely and is filled with interesting topics! However, if you don’t have the time to answer my three questions sometime after Oct. 5 (pending approval from my professor), I completely understand. Life is busy.

Thanks for your time. I looking forward to hearing from you.
