Pleasantville Contributors

Candace Derickx – Founder/Editor-in-Chief

beautiful you

Candace NEVER looks like this, but this is Life in Pleasantville and every thing here is wine and roses with an occasional dog fart thrown in to keep it real. Unable to find her version of “Pleasantville” in the real world she decided to create it, hence Life in Pleasantville is not a place people, but a state of mind. This is especially true when it comes to travel, because Candace has never met a destination she didn’t love. Maybe it’s her love of people that make it so. Owner of a seasonal business, Community Manager for Canada’s best blogging network, erm, a blogger who can’t juggle yet owns the moniker See Mummy Juggle, and a contributor to the amazing Go RVing, is it any wonder she needs things to be all matchy matchy here in Pleasantville? Her house is a disaster.

Katja Wulfers – Editorkatja wulfers

Katja Wulfers is a writer, traveller, and gourmande.

Katja is addicted to pastries and her great-many times removed-grandfather was beheaded during the French revolution, which explains a lot. She comes from a long line of nomads (probably trying to keep their heads on their shoulders) who believed in the romance and adventure of travel and she’s trying to pass that on to her children. That’s not always easy when juggling the kids’ sports, volunteering, writing, and an active social life that includes eating a lot of cheese.

To further fuel the travel bug, Katja writes travel and culinary tourism articles here and at Jack Straw Lane, where she features one of her favourite mediums for storytelling – natural light photography. Katja is a devoted Instagram fan, and you can follow her there or on Twitter at katjawulfers.

Elaine Atkins

Elaine-Atkins 3

Elaine Atkins is an everyday girl from Toronto with a love of beauty, style, food, travel, and everything in between. Her interest in beauty and skincare is showcased on her beauty blog Toronto Beauty Reviews while she shares her latest loves and experiences over on the aptly named lifestyle site, Elaine Loves

You can often find her listening to her song of the moment over and over again (much to her husband’s dismay), likely with a coffee in hand. Elaine’s ideal day would be shopping, getting pampered, and of course dessert should be involved! Although she enjoys getting glammed up for a night out, you can find her trying to navigate life as a new mom to her baby boy, while hanging with her husband and her cat, Baxter.

Jennifer Pitt

Jennifer Pitt

Jennifer Pitt lost her mind and had a baby at 38, and when she is not hard at work in civil service or ranting about motherhood on her blog Mommies Drink, she is probably failing at cooking something somewhere. She makes a mean vodka and club soda, and if you ask nicely she may even share. She loves connecting with people, and you can find her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Laureen Farnam

laureen

Laureen MacDonald Farnam believes that life is enhanced when there’s a story … and there’s always a story. As a mother of two and wife of one, there appears to be an endless supply of material. Laureen grew up in the Town of Glace Bay on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia and then spent time in Austin, Texas and Ottawa, Ontario, but in all her years away the ocean was still home. Laureen now lives in Bedford, Nova Scotia where she can see the ocean anytime she wants.

Being the fifth of five kids in a family comes with some amazing benefits, and the best of those benefits was learning how to communicate, be patient, and share. After much encouragement from friends she started a blog, Tempered With Kindness. She adheres to the philosophy to say what you need to say, but don’t forget to temper it with kindness.

You can connect with Laureen on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, G+.

Nicole MacPherson

nicoleyoga2

Nicole MacPherson is a former economist and quantitative analyst who still likes to casually throw around phrases like “mean-reverting behaviour” and “cost/ benefit analysis.” Correlated – but not causated – to this is her love of math jokes, statistics, and organizing things.

For every yang there is a yin, and that explains Nicole’s passion for yoga, healthy living, and red wine. Her Type A personality needs a lot of OM to keep balanced, or at least to keep the guys in her life from hiding when she’s writing out her to-do lists. When she’s not visiting Pleasantville, she’s writing about life with testosterone at Girl in a Boy House and other things at YummyMummyClub.ca. As well, she is on TwitterInstagram, and Pinterest.

Jeni Marinucci

jeni marinucci

Jeni Marinucci is a freelance writer with a school-age son and a teenage daughter. She has a guilty conscience, a love for humour, and a questionable home-haircut. After her children were old enough to make their own sandwiches, she returned to University to complete her B.A. in English Literature—a designation which has provided her with an extensive library and crushing student loans. When no teaching college wanted her, she had to choose between taking orders through a drive-thru window or from an editor. She chose the latter.

Jeni also blogs at highlyirritable and can be found on Twitter at @highlyirritable

Anne Radcliffe

Anne Radcliffe

Anne is one of those people who usually speaks to others in memes, pop culture references and SAT words. She never knew for sure exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up, which is why she has a degree in film, a former career in hospitality sales, and has now gone back into food. This last had been predicted by her mom, who likes to regale strangers with the story about how Anne was responsible for using Grapenuts cereal as a topping on salad first–at the tender age of three. Her friends describe her as “hilarious when you get to know her,” but it could be that they are just amused by the way she gets riled up when reading the paper.

When not talking about herself in the third person, Anne frequently attempts to explain the laws of physics and high school chemistry according to the kitchen on her home blog FoodRetro. If you want to know why ice melts or pretzels turn brown, and you want to make food that you never imagined could be made from scratch in the process, she’s your blogger. You can find her on Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook.

Glynis Ratcliffe

Glynis Ratcliffe used to be an opera singer, but after her daughter begged her to stop singing and be quiet for the millionth time, she decided to use her inside voice and write instead. Now she spends her time writing about the important things in life, like potty training, eating too much Nutella and being a feminist and mental health advocate through it all. She writes regularly for online publications like Scary Mommy, BLUNTmoms, Romper, YMC, and The Washington Post as well. Blog, The Joy of Cooking (for Little Assholes): http://littleassholes.com Facebook:  http://facebook.com/glynisratcliffewriterTwitter: http://twitter.com/operagirl  Instagram: http://instagram.com/glynis

Dawn Trudeau is a former early childhood educator who will tell you up front that having a degree in kids does absolutely nothing to help when raising your own. She also touched on health and nutrition professionally which has led to her love of good food. Dawn loves to write about food, photograph food and eat food. Guess that makes her a foodie!

Her passion for blogging about food, family and life is displayed over at Simple & Savoury. Dawn believes in balanced living so yes, eat the chocolate and have a glass of wine, relax and enjoy.

Kelly Williams

kelly williams

Kelly Williams is a freelance writer, second-degree black belt, mother of four, and triumphant domestic warrior. Her daily battles include well-known enemies: laundry and clutter.

Dinner continues to be her primary nemesis and she has suffered much defeat at his hands. But, like any good soldier, she is well-versed in the use of various weapons. She wields a hammer as skillfully as a vacuum and once changed a lock using only a butter knife. When practicing karate, her weapons of choice are her brain, fists, feet, and perhaps the occasional nun-chuck.

Kelly applies her martial arts lessons of patience, discipline, and respect to parenting, and, if she’s being totally honest, reminding her kids she has a mean hip throw doesn’t hurt either.

You can find Kelly on twitter at @KellyWilli, at her blog KelliWilli, or on Pinterest. She’s new to Instagram, but would love to join you there.
