North Star Louisbourg Is the Maritime Dream and Yes, You’re Invited

North Star Louisbourg is what I would do if I moved to Cape Breton Island to live out my dream as the hostess with the mostess. Well, almost. If I were a world-class designer married to another world-class designer, both of us with irresistible Scottish accents and enough money to buy a 20-bedroom oceanfront hotel, then that’s what I would do. So, not quite my reality, but Colin and Justin? Yeah, I’m happy to visit and live vicariously through them. And the best part? The door is wide open for you too.

The North Star was purchased during COVID, a well-loved but worn-down property that was crying out for exactly the kind of people who would see potential instead of problems. Colin and Justin saw both, fell hard for the place, and got to work. They documented the whole adventure in a series for CBC Gem, which is worth watching before you go, not because you need to do your homework, but because it makes the whole thing richer when you arrive and realize how much love went into every single room.

And the result is North Star Louisbourg, the only oceanfront hotel in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, and honestly one of the most thoughtfully designed, genuinely warm places I have stayed in a very long time.

I’ve been in love with Cape Breton for years. I come back every chance I get. But staying at North Star added a new layer to what this island means to me. Let me tell you about it.

Do Colin and Justin Make the Experience?

Yes. And also no. Let me explain.

Yes, because Colin and Justin bring something genuinely rare to this place. If you know them from HGTV, Cottage Life, or their column in the National Post, you know the polished, high-gloss version of the brand. That’s not what you get at North Star. What you get is the stripped-down, truest version of who they actually are. You know how certain places bring out the best version of people? Cape Breton does that to almost everyone, but it does something particular to these two. Here, they are not Colin and Justin the design celebrities. They are Colin and Justin, hotel proprietors, wiping tables, taking reservations, serving dinner, chatting at the bar, and genuinely delighted to be doing all of it. There is no performance. That’s what makes it land.

And no, because Cape Breton has never needed anyone to make it magical. The people who live and work here do that on their own. One of the first decisions Colin and Justin made when they took over was to hire locally, specifically Atlantic women over 50, because they recognized immediately that these were the women who would show up, roll their sleeves up, and build something worth building. They were right. Case in point: Mrs. MacDonald, the warmly beloved matriarch of North Star, the woman you will almost certainly speak to when you call to book your stay. She is a local legend, the kind of person a place like this simply cannot exist without, and Colin and Justin will be the first to tell you so. The staff at North Star carry the same warmth and groundedness that defines Cape Breton hospitality everywhere you go on this island. You feel it the moment you walk in.

Could you enjoy this property without either of those things? Sure. The rooms are beautiful, the views are stunning, the food is exceptional. But together, Colin and Justin’s particular brand of hands-on, ego-free hospitality and the quiet, deep-rooted warmth of the Cape Breton community they’ve woven themselves into, they create something that is genuinely hard to replicate. That’s the magic. That’s why people come back.

North Star Louisbourg: What to Expect When You Arrive

North Star sits on a five-acre peninsula in Louisbourg with unbroken views across Louisbourg Harbour and out to the open Atlantic. From the property, on a clear day, you can see the 18th-century Fortress of Louisbourg, which glows in the late afternoon light in a way that makes you feel like you’ve accidentally time-travelled. You can also see the Louisbourg Lighthouse, which is the site of the first lighthouse in Canada and was recently refurbished to looking absolutely glamorous.

The resort has 22 guest suites and rooms, many with ocean views. My room was huge, bright, and beautifully designed in exactly the way you’d expect from this duo. Layered textures, a coastal palette that’s sophisticated rather than kitschy (no navy-and-white anchor motifs here, thank you), and a quiet warmth that made the space feel genuinely lived-in and cared for. The rooms are set before you arrive: lighting on, music playing, temperature dialled in. The small details are the whole point.

Some suites include kitchenettes, making them ideal for longer stays. There are ocean-facing rooms, garden-view rooms, and even a dog-friendly suite for those who travel with four-legged companions.

The Bothy: Live Music, Local Seafood, and One More Glass of Wine

Attached to the resort is The Bothy, a restaurant housed in a Quonset hut (a semi-circular metal structure, fully timber-lined inside) that is warmer and more charming than that description suggests. Local Celtic musicians play here on a regular basis, the kind of live music that sneaks up on you and suddenly you realize you’ve been sitting with your wine for an extra hour because you couldn’t bring yourself to leave.

The food is local in the truest sense. Fresh halibut comes from the nearby wharf. The greens come from Back Beach Gardens, the neighbour’s garden, literally harvested and on your plate within the hour. Honey comes from Tuckamore Homestead, run by a young couple who came back to Cape Breton in their thirties to build something. There is a reason everything tastes different here. There is a reason the micro greens on your salad make you stop mid-bite. It’s because the earth is still in them.

The weekend brunch at North Star has become something of a local legend, drawing people from well beyond Louisbourg. If you can time your visit to include a Saturday or Sunday morning, do it.

And then there’s Coast, the resort’s second restaurant, which is where breakfast happens and where I had a seafood chowder that I will be thinking about for the rest of my life. I say this with full awareness that my grandmother made a very good chowder and I am grateful she cannot hear me say that. Coast is the kind of breakfast spot that makes you want to linger over coffee and then go back for one more bowl of something before you head out for the day. Fuel up here. The island has a lot to show you and you’re going to want the energy.

Where You Are: Louisbourg and What’s Nearby

Louisbourg is a small town on the southeast coast of Cape Breton, about 30 minutes from Sydney along Nova Scotia Trunk 22. It is not on the Cabot Trail, which surprises people, but that is not a loss. This part of the island is quieter, more rugged, and wildly underappreciated.

Louisbourg has one of the most dramatic histories of any town in Canada. Founded by the French in 1713 after they were forced from Newfoundland, the Fortress of Louisbourg became the largest fortified town in 18th-century North America and the heart of French colonial power. It fell to the British twice (1745 and 1758) and was finally demolished on British orders. The fortress you visit today is a painstaking Parks Canada reconstruction begun in the 1960s, the largest historic reconstruction project in Canadian history. Walking those cobblestoned streets, with costumed interpreters and period cooking fires going, it doesn’t feel like a museum. It feels like a town that just happens to be 300 years old.

What to Do Near The North Star

Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site: Set aside a full day. This is the largest historic reconstruction project in Canadian history, and it earns every hour you give it. Cobblestone streets, costumed interpreters, period meals served in character. It is 3.3 km from North Star.

Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail: An easy, stunning coastal walk along the Atlantic shoreline. The lighthouse itself has just been refurbished. Bring your camera and your breath.

Cycling: Louisbourg is flat and has very little traffic. In a town of 700, it’s about as bike-friendly as it gets.

Louisbourg Playhouse: Walking distance from North Star. Cape Breton music, live theatre, and dance. The island’s musical tradition is one of its greatest gifts, and this is a great place to receive it.

Coastal Trails: The rugged Atlantic coastline around Louisbourg is threaded with walking trails. Gooseberry Cove, Baleine, and Main-a-Dieu are all within a short drive. These are not tourist trails. They are the real Cape Breton.

How to Book (Yes, You Have to Call)

North Star does not have online booking and this is very much on purpose. You call them. You speak to a human, quite possibly Mrs. MacDonald, who is a local legend, or Colin or Justin themselves. They will ask what time you’re arriving so your room is ready when you get there. If you’ve read my article about extinction of experience you’ll know why I love this analog approach!

I know. It’s almost aggressively wholesome. But it works, and the moment you experience it you’ll understand exactly why they built it this way.
