Get To Know the Kawarthas

by Candace Sampson

The thing about Canada is that it covers such a vast area and has so much to explore that it can be easy to miss some of the gems. Take The Kawarthas, the land of shining water, for example. Just east and northeast of Toronto, the Kawarthas include the areas of Peterborough, Lindsay, Bethany, Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Kirkfield, Kinmount and Omemee. A short trip for most in Ontario, The Kawarthas offers enough activities to make a perfect weekend escape for the whole family.

Four Can’t Miss Activities in The Kawarthas

Summer Theatre

The Kawarthas is known for it’s summer theatre and concerts. Performances can be caught at an array of theatres in the region, including The Westben in Campbellford, a 400 seat timber-frame barn that opens onto a lush meadow, surrounded by the gently rolling hills of Northumberland County.

Farmers Markets

The Kawarthas is a food lovers paradise. An abundance of clean air, fresh water and rich farmland produce some of the world’s best agricultural products. Prepare to find the best the region has to offer at one of the over 10 farmers markets that run every Saturday until Thanksgiving. If, however, you would prefer to just eat the food instead of prepare it, the Kawarthas has a huge selection of resorts, bistros and restaurants that take full advantage of the locally sourced fresh produce and meat.

Bond with Your Past

The Kawarthas has a rich history that started with the fur trade, logging and mining. As a Canadian, it’s story is your story. At the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, you’ll find fascinating dioramas and artifacts that depict life among the early fur traders and voyageurs. Also in Peterborough, look for the Hutchinson House, which offers a glimpse in to life in Ontario in the 1800s.

Ride Off Into the Sunset

Whether you’re looking for extreme mountain biking, or leisurely rides with outstanding scenery, The Kawarthas offers it all. The Trans Canada Trail offers a relatively flat terrain with exceptional views, while the Trent River Truckin’ is not for the faint of heart. At 63 km long, this bike trail follows the Trent Severn Waterway, with opportunities to stop and take in breathtaking scenery along the way.
