The Power of a Good Haircut

by Candace Sampson

“A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.”
Coco Chanel

If you look at history, what Coco Chanel said is true. Twiggy, Jennifer Aniston, Farah Fawcett, Halle Berry – one haircut enshrined them all in the pages of fashion history. One trip to a salon changed their careers forever.

That is the power of a good haircut.

There is so much to think about, when deciding on a haircut – what will suit your bone structure and hair texture, what maintenance level are you willing to commit to?

Most women have an emotional attachment to their hair.  Think about the post trauma suffered after a bad haircut. Crying over hair? It seems so ridiculous but it happens everyday.

Flip side, a good haircut has great rewards – the #1 being it can take years off your appearance.

At some point we all need a change – it keeps life interesting. If you’ve been thinking about getting a haircut or haven’t changed your hairstyle in the past 5 years, take a leap of faith this summer, go to the salon and discover a improve version of you. You never know, you might make it into the pages of fashion history too.

Although I’d like to believe that I absorbed some of my Mother’s hair knowledge, here is some advice from our blog hair expert – Ramsey. I’ve also included some hairstyles done by the Stylists from the Texture Hair Salon and the Boutique in this post – for some hair inspiration.

When it comes to haircuts, what are some concerns your clients have?

The biggest concern is that it will be too short. That’s number one. They have others too – like will it suit me or can I style it at home as well as my Stylist does – but these are all secondary.

Can a haircut be used to highlight facial features or help hide flaws?

A hairstyle can definitely be used to highlight a feature or cover a flaw. Hair cutting is all about face shapes, lines and circles.

Highlighting features: It can bring out your cheek bones and your jaw line.

Covering a flaw: A fringe bang can can conceal wrinkles on the forehead.

There are so many things a good haircut can do.

As a Stylist, how do you help a guest select the right haircut?

Helping a guest choose the right style is all in the consultation. I have to ask the right questions, so that I have a better idea of what lifestyle they have, and find out which facial features they want to highlight and any flaws they may feel they might want to hide. A good consultation ensures a happy ending – as a Stylist – that is what matters to me most.

About Natasha Bernardi

Growing up, the number one beauty lesson Natasha had engrained into her brain, by her mother, is that you should always make the effort to look good – hair, clothing and make up – but it was never about vanity. It was more about taking pride in your appearance. Her mother taught them to always respect others and themselves too. Natasha started Bernardi Beauty Blogfollow with her sister to give them something different to do together and to write about the things they love. These fashionable ladies cover everything from hair to heel and everything in between and then some. Over the past few years they’ve met so many fantastic and creative people and this is just the beginning. Other things Natasha loves – my family, friends, chocolate, working out, wine, cooking and football. Her goal in life – to be happy!

See, I’ve had pretty good experiences at Supercuts, both in Bath and in Birmingham. The one time I tried a slightly more expensive place (well, twice actually) my hair was so badly damaged. It was like the hairdresser had no idea what to do and the heat atyling she did made my hair feel like straw. It’s always a gamble I find.
