Everyone knows that bored cats are naughty cats.
Sofas become scratching posts (Milo, you were the master climber/scratcher), glasses get heaved off of horizontal surfaces (thanks for that middle-of-the-night lesson, Fuzzy) and lifelong kitty companions become the mortal enemy (looking at you, kitty sisters Boo and Binoo).
Whether your kitty companions are indoor cats or simply stuck inside because of bad weather, it’s good to have creative ways to keep them entertained indoors (your furniture will thank you). But seriously, experts say that just like humans, cats can become depressed.
“As many as 40% of felines fall into funks out of sheer boredom”, according to Nicholas Dodman, Director of the Tufts University Animal Behavior Clinic. Signs include lax grooming, overeating and sleeping in the morning when their natural instinct is to be hunting.
Leave it to the clever people at Purina Friskies to come up with a way to combine treats with toys. Friskies Pull ‘n Play combines kitty’s favorite treats with a fun, wobbly cat toy, named Wobbert. Pull ‘n Play is designed to keep kitty happy and more importantly, busy.
Wobbert has two different ways kitty can get to the treats. The edible strings stick out Wobbert’s ears and the crunchy treats are dispensed from his tummy when kitty gives Wobbert a good tap with her paw. Click here for details on how to play!
It takes a bit for cats to get the hang of it, but once they do, they start batting it around to get to their favorite treats. I like that my two fur babies have to work for the reward. Too lazy to play means no treats today.
(It also means treat time isn’t over in minutes, which is a bonus for beating the winter blues.)
Here are a few tips to introduce your kitties to Wobbert:
Start with the Treats Only – Get them used to the crunchy treats and try to figure out which flavor they prefer. This will motivate them to play with Wobbert later on.
Play String Games – Use the string treats as you would a string, pausing long enough for a nibble when they successfully catch it.
Demonstrate How It Works – Put it all together and show them how it works by batting the toy and showing them that treats pop out.
Give Them Lots of Praise – Remember to give them praise and scratches behind the ears when they get it right.
Integrate It Into Their Routine – Fill Wobbert and give him a good shake. Just like the telltale treat bag noise is their cue to come running, kitties will learn what to expect when they hear Wobbert being filled.
