Every once in awhile an idea comes along that’s so brilliant you know that only a mother could have thought of it. Such is the case with VarageSale, the buy/sell phenomenon sweeping across the globe with millions already on board.
Tami Zuckerman was spending a lot of time in bed during her pregnancy due to nausea. In order to keep boredom at bay she passed the time on social media and began to notice an interesting trend. People were buying and selling their stuff through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Drawn to these groups she began to sell ALL THE THINGS but soon found herself frustrated with the experience.
As you know, necessity is the mother of invention and Tami turned to her programmer husband to help her find a better way. VarageSale was born.
VarageSale is a platform where local and interest based groups form communities to buy, sell and hangout. Members of the groups list items for sale, comment on them and discuss whether they want to purchase. It’s a really fun way to meet people within the community and it’s less threatening than other forums where you purchase from complete strangers.
VarageSale counts over a million members all over the world and on July 22nd they officially launched in Ontario!
Since Tami is a former school teacher, the company is making it a priority to help kids in each community they launch in. In Ontario, they’ve partnered with First Book Canada. Almost 25% of homes in Canada don’t have a single book in it. First Book Canada is working hard to change that by getting books into the hands of kids that need them the most. VarageSale wants to help. Starting July 22nd, when any new or existing community in Ontario adds 1,500 new members VarageSale will donate $2,500 to First Book Canada. That’s over 600 books in each local community.
We’re celebrating the Ontario launch of VarageSale with a Twitter Party this Wednesday, August 5th at 8PM EDT. We’ll be talking about clutter, organization and favourite finds. We’ll also be sharing how you can help First Book Canada. We hope you’ll download the app before Wednesday to check out how VarageSale works in your community!
