The weather turned across large parts of the country this week. If social media is anything to go by, the cold snap caught us unawares since we’re all new to winter and changing seasons. This now leaves us scrambling to change out the flip flops in our front closets to Sorels, as well as getting ready to hibernate once we stock up on creature kitchen comforts. Everything selected for this week’s Crush and Covet ensures we’ll either enjoy the time we spend cooking for ourselves and our families, or stay awake while we’re doing it.
Laureen Farnam – I have been dreaming of a magical contraption for years and I was sure it would never come to be because the sheer awesomeness was too much, but then one recent morning someone showed me the alarm clock of my dreams. Behold, The Barisieur from Josh Renouf Design. This wonderful invention will actually brew a cup of coffee right at your bedside, allowing you to wake to the delightful aroma of your favourite morning beverage. Talk about java joy! I love the description from the website. “Living slow even when times are fast.”
Maija Craig – We’ve been renovating and the next step is to add colour to my kitchen. Winter is coming and that means cold dreary days that need a little brightening, which is why I’m stocking her kitchen with this super cute vintage Pioneer Woman bakeware from Walmart. I already have a collection of tried and true recipes, like Dark Gingerbread Cake and Easy Scalloped Potatoes that I’m looking forward to trying with pieces from this collection.
Gwen Leron – I had an unfortunate incident with my slow cooker not long ago. I turned it on, went back to what I was doing, and shortly after, I saw a big spark in the kitchen. The cord had been pressed up against the slow cooker, so the heat melted it and messed up the wiring. No more slow cooker. So now that it’s fall and the slow cooker is heavily used in my home this time of year, I need a new one, fast.
Kelly Williams – I bought a Kitchen Aid stand mixer 22 years ago and it is glorious. A paddle, whisk, and dough hook came with the mixer and I use those on the regular, but I recently purchased the slicer and shredder attachment and I am now in small appliance nirvana. I make a lot of recipes that require shredded cheese and now I do not have to fight with my box grater trying to shred that last bit of cheese without shaving off part of my finger. It so easy and fast, plus it’s dishwasher safe. I love eating cheese and hate cleaning up, so this is a definite win for me.
Katja Wulfers – My kitchen can best be described as there appears to have been a struggle. I’m KIDDING! My kitchen is actually more of a teens live here and why is the damn dishwasher still not emptied? Anyway, besides learning to ignore what I don’t like, I also know what I do like, and it’s anything eclectic, including the decor and accessories I cook with. The shelves that house my recipe books are made of reclaimed barn boards, there’s not a matching cup in the cupboards, and I love pieces that remind me of where they come from. This acacia serveware salad bowl still looks like the tree it came from.
