When Mom Central Canada asked me to share the new augmented reality boxes from General Mills, I didn’t reply to them. I figured if I just ignored them they would leave me alone and I wouldn’t have to admit that I didn’t know what that was. The truth is the whole thing initially caused my brain to seize up like I’d just been handed a long-division question. I’m not very tech savvy. So when they said “augmented reality” I said, “What you talkin’ bout Willis?”.
I love the tenacious Mom Central team though because they came back and explained it to me in terms that even I could understand. And so here we are. I get to explain it to you! So what is it?
It’s a really cool way to share in the excitement of the Olympics!!! Really. And it’s as simple as 1, 2, 3.
The first thing you need to do is download the app Blippar to your smart device (Apple and Android smart phones and tablets only). As an app-happy person, this I knew how to do.
Next, grab your specially marked box of Cheerios Cereals, Oatmeal Crisp Cereals, Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Reese Puffs, Nature Valley, Gushers and Fruit by the Foot.
Finally, using the Blippar app, scan the box and start having fun. I’m not even kidding. Lots of fun.
It’s that easy. Three simple steps. Hours of entertainment.
This app is so cool, it literally brings the box to life right in front of your eyes. I’ve been busy all afternoon virtually speedskating and scoring hundreds of goals. Okay, tens of goals. That virtual goalie is good. What can I say? The app also allows you to take pictures of yourself with your favourite athletes. My kids have been loving this!
Best of all of course, is it shares our Canadian Olympians stories. I love knowing these amazing athletes better. When the Olympics start in a little under a month, it’ll mean that I will be cheering on someone I know just a little bit better.
As I’ve mentioned before, I am a big fan of the sponsors of our Canadian Olympic team. Without them, our incredible athletes might not have this incredible opportunity. I love that General Mills is encouraging us all to get into the spirit of the Olympics with this fun, interactive app.
So, here’s my final question. Can I augment my own reality now?
