As the curator of this weekly feature, I get first dibs (or at least a first look) at what the writers are jonesing for, and they have outdone themselves this week. Rhiannon Giddens? Voice of a goddess. Yoga with Adrienne? Where has this woman been all my amtaeurish, bendy life?
But enough with the rhetorical questions. Go enjoy the collective sourcing they’ve done for you.
Laureen Farnam – Wow! What a voice! Rhiannon Giddens is an amazing singer and now that I’ve learned a little more about her I know that’s the tip of the iceberg. She was featured on a recent CBS Sunday Morning segment and as soon as she opened her mouth to sing I had chills. Turns out she is a classically trained opera singer who chose instead to focus on the music of her state and country with her band, Carolina Chocolate Drops (with whom she won the Best Traditional Folk Album Grammy) and now she’s breaking out as a star in her own right. She has a new EP, Factory Girl (plus her 2015 release Tomorrow Is My Turn – which I will be buying as soon as I finish typing this) and she’s been nominated for a 2016 Grammy Award in the Folk category. Seriously! You have to listen.
Kelly Williams – Both my daughters got yoga mats for Christmas this year because I was getting concerned with their lack of physical activity and thought they might actually ossify as they stared into their iPad screens. As yoga classes can get pricey, especially when you are multiplying the cost by three, I started my hunt for an online video that was good for beginners and had an instructor that both my kids and I would enjoy. When I saw my friend post that she was starting Yoga Camp – Yoga with Adrienne, I thought I would try it too. After only a few classes, I now have a wee yoga crush on Adrienne. She’s down to earth, has a good sense of humour, and is encouraging without putting any pressure on you. My youngest girl is enjoying the classes so much that she’s the one telling me it’s time to get our mats out. All I can say to that is, “Namaste.”
Maija Craig – I’m glad January has finally brought snow in Southern Ontario (although I did enjoy the break from freezing temperatures). This year, I want to fight my inner desire to hibernate and get outside and active and that means snowshoes! I currently have my eyes on this pair from MEC and I’m thinking of matching pairs for the kids.
Kelli Catana – I’m totally crushing on this new 5-piece travel set from Hudson’s Bay Company. In collaboration with Herschel Supply this limited edition travel set will launch in Hudson Bay stores on February 16, 2016 which means it’s going to be available just in time for March Break travel! Featuring the iconic Bay stripes these travel bags are simply gorgeous!
Nicole MacPherson – I love this sweatshirt from Yoga Rebel. Especially for January, when we are all resetting our diets after decadent December. This sweatshirt makes me want to pick up some pom poms and cheer while I make a veggie stir fry for dinner.
