We Day Ottawa – We Could Learn a Few Things from Our Kids

By //  by Candace Sampson

The words of Martin Luther King never lose their potency. Whether reading them or hearing his voice boom out the truth, you are covered with chills. It’s no mistake then that the founders of We Day and Free the Children, Craig and Marc Kielburger, choose to share King’s message throughout their one day show, because no one knew how to mobilize people better than King and no one knows how to mobilize our youth better than the Kielburgers. In Ottawa alone yesterday, the We Day team, brought …

Discover Halton: Snowshoeing and the Sweet Water Festival

By //  by Katja Wulfers

Past a forest on the right, farmer’s fields hidden under heavy snow on the left, over a small rise, and at the end of the road sits Crawford Lake. It’s the site of a reconstructed Iroquoian village, a meromictic lake — the different water levels don’t mix —, and has kilometers of trails perfect for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The park offers special events throughout the year and now is the time to enjoy the Sweet Water Season along with great snowshoeing conditions thanks to …

Alight at Night Delights

By //  by Candace Sampson

I was feeling less than enthusiastic about the holidays this year. I have an inordinate amount of work on my plate right now, plus a typical holiday schedule packed with parties and engagements and so I've been feeling more frazzled than festive as of late. When this happens you really have no choice but to find Christmas spirit on your own, if it isn't coming looking for you. Thankfully, this year I found mine at Alight at Night. My family was invited to come and check out Alight At …

Fort Fright

By //  by Candace Sampson

I can not tell a lie. I was dreading our visit to Fort Fright at Fort Henry. Dreading it. I am a big ole scaredy cat and the thought of a night with the undead gave me chills. I was given some valuable advice though from Susan Leclair from Parks of the St. Lawrence. "Come with friends," she said, "it makes it a lot more fun." And so it was that three moms and four daughters headed to Kingston for a night of terror, the group evenly divided into chickens and thrill seekers. What better group to …

Pumpkinferno – An Autumn Delight

By //  by Candace Sampson

I first visited Pumpkinferno at Upper Canada Village in 2013, in its second year of operation. Much like my children at the time, it was but a baby. My how the times change. Now in its 7th year, this traditional fall celebration of orange gourds is only getting better and better. If you're looking for a non-spooky, fun outing with your family each fall, then Pumpkinferno is the perfect evening out. What follows is my original article, thankfully the information remains completely relevant, …
