Shark Attack

Sometimes you want a drink with a little bite. Sometimes you want one with a big one. Like this Shark Attack.

This drink is most definitely a “sippin’ drink”. It’s the kind of drink that’s perfect for mommas who’ve just got home from running their kids to the umpteenth soccer game or cheerleading practice and want to sit and unwind in the back yard listening to Jimmy Buffett and enjoying the warm summer air. Wow, that sounds really good doesn’t it? I know what I’m doing later.

Shark Attack

1/4 cup maraschino cherry
1/4 cup lemon Slices
1/4 cup pineapple chunks
1/4 cup tequila
1/4 cup triple sec
1/2 cup orange juice
1/4 cup pineapple juice
1/4 cup amber rum (overproof if you’ve got it)
splash grenadine
lots of ice

In a pitcher, add all the ingredients and stir to combine. Garnish with maraschino cherries. Pour into rocks glasses over ice, garnish with a cherry and serve.

Pleasantville Note: The ice is really very important with this drink, unless of course you want your Shark Attack to turn you into a zombie, then go with no ice.

Loosey Goosey Boozy Boozy Sangria

My intention this summer, was to provide you, dear reader, with a week of no fail sangria recipes. I really researched the heck out of this for you, because I’m nothing if not giving. I tried countless recipes and combinations and even threw out one batch for being truly awful. There were tears, because that was a lot of booze to say goodbye to and I hate waste.

What did I learn from all of this? Well, first, that I don’t like sangria made with white wine. Pitooey! Blech! I know this is immature of me, but you won’t find a recipe for white wine sangria here. My blog, my rules. Second, sangria made with red wine makes me happy. Very, very happy.

In the end I only came up with two sangria recipes that I feel are truly worthy of you.

So, without further ado, here’s the first recipe. Why did I call it this? Because you can be loosey goosey with the combinations and it is boozy. Sorry, creative names are not my forte. That being said, there is absolutely nothing tame about this sangria. Make it a day in advance to really enjoy the flavours and stir before serving. Serve over ice and if you feel the need, cut it with a little spring water. I won’t judge.

Loosey Goosey Boozy Boozy Sangria

750 ml bottle of Merlot
1 1/2 cups white rum or vodka
2 tbs Cointreau, or Triple Sec, or Grand Marnier
1 cup sugar
1 cup fresh orange juice

Quarter of a pineapple, cut into chunks
1 orange cut into wedges
1 pear cut into chunks
1 apple cut into chunks

Pour wine into large pitcher, add next four ingredients and stir well, ensuring sugar is dissolved. Add fresh fruit and stir again. Chill for a minimum of 4 hours, but is best the next day.

Mint Iced Tea

Oh lawd, it’s hot! It’s so hot that I’m channeling my inner Southern Belle (because secretly I’d love to be a Southern lady). I’m longing to sit on a porch sipping iced tea and fanning myself all day. The reality though, is that I don’t have a porch and even if I did, I wouldn’t have time to sit there. I do however, have iced tea.

This Mint Iced Tea is in my refrigerator from June 1 to September 1 every summer. It’s incredibly refreshing, and it’s perfect with spirits or alone. Finally, as I’ve said before with things like hot chocolate, popcorn, and waffles, why on earth would you buy this stuff? Iced tea in a can tastes like tin, the powdered stuff is awful and the stuff from a fountain is too sweet. If you haven’t made iced tea before, do yourself a favour and try either this recipe or google a basic recipe. You won’t go back to the store bought kind.

Mint Iced Tea

3 cups of boiling water
4 tea bags (black tea preferably, Orange Pekoe works well)
Mint Leaves
1/2 cup granulated sugar
4 cups cold water
1 cup fresh orange juice
1 lemon – juice squeezed from it

Boil 3 cups water in a large pot. Once boiled turn off and throw in tea bags and mint (start with around 8-10 leaves, increase if you like it “mintier”). Let tea and mint steep for 10 minutes. Remove bags and mint leaves from pot squeezing out excess liquid. Add granulated sugar, stirring well to dissolve. Stir in cold water, orange juice and lemon juice. Transfer to pitcher and chill. Serve over ice and garnish with orange slices.

Pleasantville Note: I make enough to fill a huge lemonade container I have with a spigot. After 12pm, all bets are off and this is just fine with vodka, bourbon or rum. Whatever gets you through sister. My kids love this (sans spirits), but watch that little ones don’t have too much, there is caffeine in it.
