Did you know 9 out of 10 people suffer from pain linked to the way they work at their desks? I can tell you that I am definitely in that group. On a daily basis I suffer from lower back pain, a sore neck and shoulders and burning eyes. That’s why I’ve made a point of making my home office ergonomically correct in 2015. My health is simply too important to ignore anymore.
The first change I’ve made is setting up a timer for myself on my phone. I like this one, but any one will do really. The timer helps keep me focused on what I need to get done in 25 minute increments and then a bell goes off and reminds me to get up and move. This is important because the human body is not made to sit for long stretches. I am a firm believer in the “use it or lose it” mantra. This has been making a noticeable difference in my work day. I am more productive and I have more energy because I am taking the time to move around.
The second change I’ve made is the introduction of ergonomically correct tools from Fellowes to ensure that I am helping to relieve key pressure points on my body. The first concern for me was my wrists. They hurt! Until I started using the Fellowes Keyboard Wrist Rocker and Fellowes Wrist Rocker for my mouse, I had no idea how much strain my wrists were actually under. Two weeks after using the wrist rocker, I am pain free. Who knew such a simple thing could be so effective? Fellowes did.
Fellowes focuses on 4 well-being zones to ensure you’re working smart. The first zone is back tension. 7 out of 10 people suffer from back pain while working at their desk. Simple tools like the Fellowes Back Support and the Fellowes Climate Control Footrest can make a world of difference. The next zone is wrist pressure.
Wrist supports help to align your wrists and redistribute pressure points to help relieve pain and prevent potential injury.
Zone 3 is neck, shoulder and eye strain. Even as I type this I can feel the pain in my shoulders and I know I’m not alone. 5 out of 10 people who work at a desk feel this pain daily. Simple solutions like the Fellowes Keyboard Tray and the Fellowes Document Holder can relieve pressure in the neck and shoulders. Finally Zone 4 is the environment you’re working in. Indoor air may be 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air outdoors. This is a concern for me, particularly in the winter when my windows are closed up tight, allowing very little fresh air to flow through. Fellowes air purifiers safely remove 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns, including pollen, ragweed and other allergens, viruses, germs, dust mites, mold spores and odors.
There you have it; four major workplace concerns and the easy solutions to fix them. I’m going to be implementing these changes over the course of the year as I strive to make my workplace environment better for my health. One lucky reader from Life in Pleasantville though is going to be able to fix their work environment immediately!
