Summer Nights

The long weekend in May kicks off the summer season and I don’t know about you, but I am more ready for summer than I’ve ever been. It’s time for flip flops, sundresses, barbecues, pool parties, sangria and summer music.

There is lots of music that define the summer season and I’ve put a few here before on the song of the day like, Love is Like a Heatwave, Boys of Summer, Sunny Days, or Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.

You can find my Pinterest board with all the Songs of Summer here.

In the meantime, I’m adding Summer Nights from Grease to the playlist. Who knows all the words? I do :)

I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues

Sometimes doing the math on how old I was when a song was released it just depressing. Take, I Guess That’s Why They Call it The Blues, for example. This song by Elton John was released in 1983. That’s 30 years ago for the mathematically-challenged. Thirty freaking years!

I was 13 at the time and loaded with teenage angst. I was in love with being in love and this song played to every emotion I had about what “real” love was supposed to be like. By the time this song was on a regular rotation on the radio, MuchMusic had just started and I was glued to my television hoping this video or Electric Avenue would play.

Whatever – Kay

Living with tweens means that you hear their music playing all the time. And sometimes, a song just sticks with you, and plays over and over in your head all day, like this one from Kay, Whatever. The video is a little annoying but maybe that’s just the over 40 in me. Also, the girl is Canadian and I love seeing young Canadian talent like this, don’t you?

Anyway, if you don’t want to be irritated by the video just go on over and browse your Facebook page while this song plays. It has great attitude to it.

And I need a little attitude to sing along with today. You?

Bye Bye Bye

Bye Bye Bye from N’Sync is on my mind this week and not because I’m pining for boy bands or anything like my friend Kellidaisy does.  Nope, I can’t get the song out of my head because the snow is melting here and I just keep singing ……

I know that I can’t take no more
It ain’t no lie
I wanna see you out that door
Baby, bye, bye, bye

It’s hard to believe it’s Easter weekend with all the snow in my yard. Only the dog is truly enjoying it. And she’s not very bright anyway.

bye bye bye

So with every drip, drip, drip off my roof I’m singing Bye, Bye, Bye.

What about you? Will the Easter Bunny be wearing snow shoes to get to you or do you have greener pastures already?

Love is Like a Heatwave

I’m writing this on Sunday to be posted Thursday, what you’re seeing right now. I feel so futuristic.

Anyway, I suspect that by the time you’re reading this I’ll be fully into the attitude of the latitude and enjoying my time on the beach in Jamaica with my husband — AKA Grizzly Adams, MacGyver, The Dough Boy, Julio the Pool Boy. He has so many names really.

The point is, I’m thinking by Thursday, on day number 4 without the kids, love will be a like a heatwave. You see where I’m going with this? Rowr.

If you haven’t had a getaway with just your spouse lately, I highly recommend you plan one.

Whiskey In the Jar

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Whiskey in the Jar is the perfect song to wrap up the week.

But first, a toast in keeping with the spirit of the day and all :)

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let’s all get drunk, and go to heaven!

The Irish Rover

The Irish Rover will be played at every pub from here to Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day because it’s a classic. This video from The Dubliners and The Pogues is one of the best known versions.

I know, I know….try not to think “dentist” when watching this. You can’t do it. I guarantee it.

This song is best played loud, while stomping your foot and lifting your beer.

So before you watch, a toast:

I drink to your health when I’m with you,
I drink to your health when I’m alone,
I drink to your health so often,
I’m starting to worry about my own!

Black Velvet Band

You haven’t lived until you’ve placed your arms around the person on either side of you in the pub and swayed back and forth singing, Black Velvet Band. That’s livin’ my friends.

While the Irish Rovers were all originally from Ireland, they are actually a Canadian band. Hooray for Canada!

So before the song, I raise my virtual glass (okay there’s nothing virtual about it) to you in a toast:

May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you’re dead.

Nothing Compares to You

The best way to describe Sinead O’Connor’s voice is haunting. This song is heartbreaking and beautiful all at once. I had high hopes for Sinead when she burst on the scene in 1990, I really thought she’d be huge. Then there was that whole unfortunate incident with the Pope and Saturday Night Live and well, you just don’t piss off the Catholics Sinead. Geez.

Anyhoo, Sinead also happens to be Irish and so fittingly belongs in my line up of songs leading up to St. Patrick’s Day.

Breathless

Really, this family brings out that green monster just a little bit. Absolutely gorgeous and talented AND they’re Irish. I mean really? What else is there?

Continuing with Irish music leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, here is The Corrs and Breathless. Enjoy.
