Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

One of the best gifts of spring is the heralding of summer just around that bend in the road. And living in a cold climate with a darker, colder and drawn out winter makes the bright, hot days of summer seem like the prize for making it through another year of seasonal cartwheels. We switch from snow pants to capris and from Boots to flip-flops in what seems like a blink of an eye. Many people love winter and snow and outdoor fun. I am not one of those people. If I dare to compare—winter is the yucky veggies and summer is the dessert.

don't compare yourself to others

The game of comparison

Why not dare to compare? The world is full of opposites and contradictions, what’s wrong with acknowledging them? Nothing. Cold is the absence of heat and dark is the absence of light, comparison is very helpful in defining each of those states. When I was teaching my kids their primary colours, red and blue were easier to name than green and blue, because in comparison red was more different to blue than green, so comparison played a role in their learning. These, however, are concrete concepts. The problem with comparison is when we apply it to people.

The great Mark Twain said “If you don’t like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.”

People are as dynamic as the weather. People are not concrete. We are very fluid in that we are constantly changing from one year to the next, from one day to the next. We are human beings being human. And being is a verb. Being is action. We are growing and learning and expanding, our cells reproduce and die, and we find new things to like and new people to spend time with. None of us are the same person today that we were yesterday. Yet, we take the instinct of comparing apples to oranges and use it on someone who is in a constant state of change.

All the parenting books tell us not to compare our children, but we do. I do. Who walked first, who talked first, who weighed more at birth. And if I don’t say it out loud (because I have read enough of those books to have some idea what I’m doing) I do make note in my mind as to which child has the higher grades in math. Yet, I can honestly say, when someone asks me who my favourite child out of my four kids is, that I do not have a favourite. Some days I may like one child a little less, but it’s usually because of what is going on with them that day. A moment in time. Nothing resets a mother’s love-o-meter like seeing their child’s angelic face as they sleep. Having four kids taught me that with every new day comes a new challenge, and a few more new reasons to love.

don't compare yourself to others

I can tell you that in both my career and my personal life, the issue I see the most, with women especially, is a desperate lack of self-worth. And I am right in there with the rest of them. I don’t know why. I have some theories that relate to culture and media and the messages we hear from the time we are born, but my theories are not tested and the solutions of changing a whole culture is not a quick fix. What I do know is that mixed in with this lack of self-worth is a tendency to compare ourselves with other women. The airbrushed beauties in magazines, the seemingly perfect people on television, the former ballerina in yoga class that perfects the King Pigeon pose, the other mothers in the park who seem to have it all together.

Seem.

They seem to have it all together.

Yet we are comparing ourselves to appearances. Comparing our dynamic selves with good moments and bad moments to what someone chooses to allow us to see of their dynamic life for a short time. I can assure you that the airbrushed model has had her heart broken at least once in her life, and she made the ugly cry face but no one was there to take a picture of it. And when that ballerina has to push out a 10lbs baby she is going to be screaming just like the rest of us did during childbirth. The model is no more or less worthy of love and happiness when she is smiling for the camera or crying herself to sleep. She is worthy because she is human. Being human is imperfection and that is the gift. She is worthy because she is imperfect. You are worthy because you are an imperfect human being. We have to drop this crazy notion that there is such a thing as perfection and embrace being who we are—an ever changing, ever evolving human being, being human.

comparison is

10 Must Haves for Travel with Newborns

When two became three a year and a half ago, we really had to think about what items we packed for our month long travels. Travel with newborns can be easy as long as you have the right gear. We covered 15 cities in 6 countries during the little one’s first year! Here’s some of my must haves for travelling during those early months.

1.    Infant travel bed – The best thing when hotels do not have cribs available or when visiting family. This contraption fits comfortably between the parents (we never had any space issues in a queen bed) and there’s no danger of rolling over the baby. Folds up compactly as well.

travel must haves for newborns
2.    Baby carrier – Travelling in most South Asian countries with large groups (read family) it would be near impossible to have a car seat. The baby carrier was used not only for our city tours by foot in London and Paris but also on planes that did not provide a basinet or baby seatbelt and on our road trips in India. I strapped myself to the seatbelt as per usual, the bottom belt tucked under the baby’s legs and the top belt secured under the two top buttons on the carrier. It’s not the safest method but it was the best we could do – I was well secured by the seatbelt and the baby was strapped onto me (no danger of any belts choking her).

3.    Breast pump – At times it’s hard to breastfeed in very public places and a hungry baby is not what you want to deal with when surrounded by chaos. Pumped milk to the rescue! Also let’s not forget that glass of wine that MUST accompany those fancy dinners or that tawny port 31,000 ft above homeland.  If you’re concerned about the 110volts vs. 220 don’t be, most hotels have a shaver outlet which works just as well for the pump. Ladies it DOES NOT work for your hair dryers or curling irons though! Be warned! If you are worried about sterilizing the bottles, nozzles e.t.c, don’t be. I always keep a small bottle of washing liquid in the diaper bag, I use this to wash all the items (at the hotel) and then because I’m skeptical about tap water in certain countries, I always boil water in the kettle and then rinse out the ice bucket. Next up toss all the washed items into the ice bucket and pour boiling water to sterilize the items. Toss the dried items into a larger ziplock.

4.    Nursing cover – I’ve fed at Westminster Abbey, a monastic ruin from 1 B.C, at the Churchill war museum, 31,000 ft above ground and countless restaurants and stores, all thanks to the discretion allowed by the nursing cover.

travel with newborns
5.    Wipes and diapers – I took these from Toronto because I did not want to deal with experimenting with the wrong kind.  For a month with a newborn we needed 3 large packs of wipes (to keep at the hotel), 3 travel sized packs (for the diaper bag) and 200 diapers.

travel with newborns
6.    Pacifiers – I used these arduously on the plane for takeoff and landing and to soothe her to sleep when we went out to eat. Given that I tend to drop things, we “lost” quite a few for the day. Even if I drop it for a second, I refuse to re-use it until it has been sterilized. Have extras on hand, like 5!

pacifiers_5935_hdr_1
7.    Blankets – I always take two blankets wherever I go. One to lay on the chair (I prefer each side to be differently coloured so that I always know which is the “dirty” side touching the seat), the other to drape over her.

baby-blankets-plain-1
8.    Disposable change pads – We’ve been in places where there has been no change station or worse, an absolutely filthy one. I like to lay the disposable change pad first and then the travel change pad on top. Yes I’m a bit of a germaphobe. Most times I either changed her in the car or tucked away in a corner at a restaurant.

travel with newborns
9.    Hand sanitizer – Oh boy did I use this! After dealing with street vendors in India, taking the subway in London and pretty much any interaction we had with “foreign” objects.

hand santizer
10.    Camera and laptop – Hey I have to update my blog and Facebook page right!?!

It’s true I’ve had to sacrifice my mandatory 7 pairs of shoes, extra jewellery, hair accessories and purses to fit these items, but truth be told, I didn’t really miss them…much! Best part is that we donated some of the clothes and extra diapers to those kids who are less fortunate in Mumbai. This also makes room for the shopping I’ve done  All in all we fit all of these and our clothes into one suitcase each (two in total), not bad eh!

Babies, Chicks, Lambs and Heart Coherence

I just love seeing all the new in spring. Not only the new flowers and new grass, but new baby animals that we get to see around Easter at the farms and petting zoos, and I am blessed to be welcoming a new baby niece in a few weeks. All this newness is a beautiful symbol of innocence. The purity and unadulterated innocence that just makes the center of your chest get all warm and fuzzy.

heart coherence

That warm and fuzzy feeling in our chest has been well studied lately, and is being referred to as heart coherence. And it’s way more than just warm and fuzzies. Institute of Heart Math is a great resource of scientific studies done on coherence, which is essentially harmonious connectedness between parts of the human body and individual parts of a community, even humanity. From HeartMath: “One of the simplest and quickest paths to heart coherence is through intentional positive feelings – compassion, caring, love and other such emotions. In contrast, we can quickly become incoherent when we experience negative attitudes such as anger, fear and anxiety.”

heart coherence

Heart coherence was the first thing that came to my mind when I heard of the Boston Marathon tragedy this week. How many of you felt a physical reaction to the news, or from seeing the images? I felt immediate compassion for the injured and immense love for the rescuers that were right in there helping everyone they could. I felt warmth in my chest despite the tickle of tears behind my eyes.

It’s not easy to feel positive energy and emotions during a tragedy. A heightened state of fear and a drive for survival is our most primitive response, and most of our mind is geared towards that automatic response. It takes mindfulness training and regular meditation practice and making a conscious decision to live your life in coherence to be able to control your automatic response to be a positive one for your body and you psyche and, dare I say, for humanity as a whole.

How can having intentional positive feelings help humanity?

heart coherence

We are all energetically connected and maybe even spiritually connected, but I have no proof of it. It’s just my belief. I’m not alone though. There are quite a few religions that believe we are all one, and quantum physics is talking about entanglement and energy connections as well.

So if we run with this idea that we are all connected, what would happen if we all felt positive emotions all at once? What would happen if we all felt a negative emotion all at once? And how can we get the whole planet to feel positive emotions during a bombing or a subsequent fatal shout-out between the police and suspect number one? These are big questions. But in my opinion, only we can make the decision that on our individual level we will create a more positive response and reality. I also believe that if we can get more compassion and love into the world it will be a better place to raise those chicks and lambs and my soon to be born baby niece.

These are segments from the documentary film I Am by Tom Shadyac that discuss Quantum Entanglement.

Revolution Movie – Act This Earth Day

Do you have plans for Earth Day? Heading to the theatre to watch Revolution, the latest documentary by Rob Stewart, would be an entirely fitting activity.

revolution movie

A couple of weeks ago, I was fortunate to be invited to an advance screening of Revolution.   This film debuted on the most screens ever for a Canadian documentary and has been blowing audiences away.  It’s an important eye opening film that families should watch together.  It’s beautiful, inspiring, discussion invoking, urgent and hopeful.  These adjective might seem at odds but trust me when I say that Revolution has a powerful message and embodies all of these qualities.  It’s a must see film.  Take your kids.  You will not leave the theatre without being affected.  Rob Stewart struck an amazing balance between raising a red flag and putting out a message of hope.   The film tells us exactly how to fight to preserve the Earth’s natural gifts.

There truly is no better time to go to the theatre and watch this powerful movie because in honour of Earth Weekend a tree will be planted on behalf of each and every person who sees Revolution between today and Monday.  Now that’s walking the walk.

Details about this special tree planting initiative can be found here.

What I love most about this movie is its message of hope, a message so important for today’s youth.  Revolution, in partnership with Metro has launched a scholarship contest for students with the best written or video essay on the topic of taking action – “What can you do to save the environment in your community.”

This is a tremendous opportunity to empower our youth.  Take them to see the movie.  Discuss the issues.  Have them write an essay.  Take action as a family.

Get details about the scholarship contest here:.

So what are you waiting for?  Celebrate planet earth by seeing Revolution this weekend with your kids, friends, neighbours, family, person you meet in the lineup at the coffee shop and help plant a forest!  Together, we will make a difference.

How to Start Seedlings Indoors

Spring is finally here and for many of us, we are excited for warmer weather, BBQ’s, and lots of backyard time. For me, one thing that makes my backyard extra special is our vegetable garden. It’s a fun project that runs from spring all the way to the end of summer and the kids enjoy being involved. My kids love everything about it—from choosing the seeds we will be planting, planting the seeds, watching the plants grow, to harvesting and eating the vegetables. Having them take part in the gardening is a great way to get them to try different veggies—if they had a hand in growing the vegetable, they are more likely to try it.

It’s April, so this is a great time to get your seedlings started indoors. The rule of thumb is to start them six weeks before the last frost. In some cities, this can be hard to predict and you may end up starting a bit too early. I’ve been there before, but it’s not a big deal. If this does happen, simply switch the plants over to larger pots until they are ready for the outdoors.

Here is what you will need to get your plants started:

·       Seeds

·       Plant pots (I use biodegradable pots that can be placed right into the ground when ready)

·       Potting soil

·       A small scoop to place the dirt in the pots

1.     The first thing we do is visit the store to decide what we will be planting. The kids go a little overboard sometimes (umm… a mango tree?) but once they see what seeds are available and realistic, they tend to come back down to earth pretty quickly! For many reasons, we always choose organic seeds and they are available are all garden centres nowadays.

how to start seedlings

2.      Next, plant the seeds in the pots according to the directions on the packets. Be sure to label the pots. Water when necessary and be sure to place the pots in or on something that will catch excess water.

3.      This step is really the hardest thing in the whole process for the kids—the waiting. But this is the part that causes the most excitement because once they see a sprout peeking through, excitement will surely ensue.

how to start seedlings

4.     Transplant the plants into your garden when they are ready. Check the seed packet to know when that timeframe will be as all plants differ.

Window Washing From the Inside Out

You know that amazing feeling when you put on a pair of freshly cleaned pair of eyeglasses or sunglasses? Life just looks so much better for a while, and you can’t believe how cloudy and blurry your vision was before you took the time to clean your glasses. Same thing with the windshield on the car, don’t you love it when you turn on the wipers and get a crystal clear view? Every once in a while that happens to our inner vision as well. We have a conversation with someone and all of a sudden we see them for who they really are, or we see the real intention behind an action. And the best feeling is when we get a clear view of who we really are and where we want to go.

ID-10020041

Sometimes I bemoan the rain, the drab weather and all those April showers. Then I try to look at the bright side, I tell my kids the grass and flowers need the rain, it washes the winter salt from the roads and that it helps to melt away that last bit of snow that is sticking around the shady parts of the yard. If we look at rain metaphorically, it is a cleansing agent for so many things. It washes away the old to give life to the new. So what are the soul messages we can take away from April Showers?

The Do Over

Part of the message of spring is what I covered in last week’s post, about taking the cues of the season to apply change to your lifestyle. But there is more to spring than the change of the season, there is also a huge element of re-birth—a chance to start anew. If last summer some of the perennials in the garden didn’t take, or the grass was a little yellow, we get a brand new chance to make them thrive this year. The same applies to our lives. We can always use a Do Over in some areas of our life, be it relationships, family or careers. The challenge, I find, is giving our selves permission to try again. We all too often forgive others their trespasses way easier than we forgive ourselves of our own. But that’s part of being human, the learning and the growing. After all, being is a verb. We are always evolving. If we are blessed enough to wake-up in the morning, we are given the gift of a Do Over and can make our life’s garden thrive.

TBP courage

I can see clearly now

I am a firm believer that none of us can fix something, or do better in the do over, if we are blind to the truth of the situation. Unfortunately, in today’s world the truth can be hard to find. It’s not always from malice that the truth is fuzzy. We live in the information age where opinions are shared at light speed on mobile devices and media outlets everywhere. We are also surrounded by many well intentioned people who love to tell us what they think about our lives. Something as personal as deciding if and when to go back to work after having a baby can lead to everyone and their dog telling you what to do. And it has got to be a cosmic joke that all that advice is usually contradictory—my mother-in-law and my best-friend consistently have opposing views. It actually takes a concentrated effort to turn off all the noise of the world and find our authentic self and what we believe in our hearts to be our own truth. But when we do we find the magic. When we are able to look at ourselves from a place of acceptance and love, and when we make decisions from a place of personal truth we thrive better than any well-tended garden.

 maya

Your homework this week is to take a few moments to quiet your mind and connect to your authentic self and then look at your life’s direction. Take a look at your relationships and your career choice and your passions from a clean window. Ask yourself if you are making choices that are right for your higher self, for the greater good of others. If your choices are not the best choice then be gentle and compassionate with your human self and take Maya Angelou’s advice “When you know better, you do better.” If your choices are just right, give yourself a big hug and get out there and dance in the springtime rain!

What to Get Your Road Warrior

From Heather Greenwood Davis

Travel people are notoriously hard to buy for. What do you get the person who has everything from a shrunken head (purchased in the very village where it was shrunk) to a painted Ostrich egg ( plucked from the dirt next to the Ostrich who laid it)? Let’s face it, nothing you get them is going to compare to the things and memories they brought back from their latest escapade. You can’t compete. Your only hope? Help them go .

These gifts are guaranteed to elevate you to hero status and may up your chances of getting an invitation to tag along on the next trip.

1. Luggage that shrinks: Last year I traveled the world with one bag. It was fabulous and light and worked well for my needs. Now that I’m home it takes up way too much space in my closet and is a constant reminder that I’m not on the road.  What I need is something that I can hide in a corner and pretend the world isn’t calling to me. I’m intrigued by Road Warrior collapsible luggage. Road Warrior’s “Micro-PoP” design allows the luggage to fully collapse to half its depth. That means you only need half the storage space. Better still the luggage comes with its own storage sleeves so you can hang it, stow it under a bed or in a drawer! Be still my heart. Expect to pay between $329 to $399 per piece.

ROAD WARRIOR LUGGAGE COLLAPSIBLE LUGGAGE

2.Short Stay Fashion: I’ve always wanted to be that girl. The one who is standing to board the plane for a quick weekend get-away with some cute piece of luggage. Everything is stowed and tucked and perfect. Instead, I’m more often THAT mom – stuff falling out of pockets, wide-open zipper, bag stuffed beyond capacity. I can’t help but think this bag would help. The House of Marley overnighter bag is available in three colours and rings in at $169.99

house of marley

3. Keeping it Cute: You know what’s tough to keep up with when you’re on the road? Beauty. I’d only need to show you a few close-ups from my year off the grid for you to see what I mean. *cough* Unibrow *cough* . While you can’t fit your esthetician in the overnight bag, there is hope. This compact all in one set from Tweezerman is meant to keep you looking more travel cutie and less travel caveman.  The rescue kit includes mini slant tweezers, mini brow mousse, mini eye enhancing highlighter pencil and mini brow shaping brush (all small enough to keep in your clutch) for about $25.

tweezerman

4. Leave the chores behind: Ahhhh vacation: sun, sand, surf, ironing… Oh? What’s that? Prefer to not worry about your super crushed clothing on the road? Well, then you are in the right place my friend. The more I can scrunch a shirt, stick it into the corner of my bag, shake it out, put it on and look good, the happier I am. And that’s what clothing from Tilley Endurables gave me. They’ve got stylish duds with a no-iron promise including one of my faves. Stylish and wrinkle-free and it will run you about $69 and take you from jeans at the pub to corporate couture.

tilley

5. Just one camera:  I am not a photographer, I just play one on Facebook. So the big DSLR that I shelled out for a few years ago is really just an expensive piece of jewelry when I travel. The camera I’m more likely to throw in my purse and actually use? The one I use for calling home and texting friends as well, my iPhone. So I was thrilled when a Facebook friend recommended a lens I could pack in my bag, add to my camera and go from a great camera that only works when I’m close to something to one that gets me the shots I’m actually after. Perfect. The attachable lenses are available online in various spots including Amazon for under $30.

Top Ten Teacher Gifts…Naughty and Nice

By Lisa Thornbury

Other than an early retirement and a class size of eight, what do teachers really desire this holiday season?

Here are ten gifts that top both the Ho-Ho and No-No lists:

1. No-No – Chocolates. We lady teachers have an image to uphold; an image which does not include stretchy polyester pants. If you bestow a box of Purdy’s upon us, we WILL eat them. Teachers are voracious. If you want to witness this firsthand, check out the staff room on “Snack Day.” The horror… So please, don’t feed the teachers.

2. Ho-Ho – Cinema Certificates. Who doesn’t enjoy a night out at the movies? Escapism is everyone’s best friend. What to buy? A pass for two would be perfect. Or go in with another family and purchase a pass good for tickets and snacks. Popcorn is exempt from the “Don’t feed the teachers” clause.

3. No-No – Clothing. Outwear (gloves, a scarf) is fine. Underwear is not fine. It’s so far from fine I don’t even have the words…

4. Ho-Ho – Shopping Mall Gift Card. When a class of say twenty pools together $20 each for a gift card, that’s a lovely $400 shopping spree to be spent on exactly what the teacher wants! Sweater sets, horn rimmed glasses, clips for securing a tight hair bun, leather pants, whatever.

5. No-No – Coffee mugs. I’ve reached my quota for coffee mugs. For life. Unless you’re planning to run a bed and breakfast or open a diner, does the average person need forty-nine coffee mugs? I use the same “I Don’t Do Mornings” mug every day. The sentiment rings true, plus it’s enormous and the handle molds perfectly to my hand. The other forty-eight mugs are merely taking up space.

6. Ho-Ho – Coffee. Teachers work with your children ALL day. Caffeine is mandatory. A Starbucks, Timmies or Second Cup gift card, not stowed inside a cute coffee mug, but tucked inside a card made by your child, is always appreciated.

7. No-No – Anything crystal. Or mirrored. Buying home accessories is a crap shoot. Try if you will, but it’s a fair bet that nobody needs a crystal swan floating upon a mirrored lake. I’m no Grinch and realize that it’s the thought that counts. THIS is why eleven years later I still own a crystal swan floating upon a mirrored lake. I can’t bring myself to get rid of it because really, it IS the thought that counts. Dammit.

8. Ho, Ho– Soap. Until recently this gift was on the naughty list. Bath bubbles and lotions too. But, a trio of hand soaps from Bath & Bodyworks is the exception. I love them and have these tasty soaps (though the scent would have you believe otherwise, you can’t actually eat them) in every bathroom in my home.

9. No-No– Scented Candles. I like candles as much as the next person but some fragrances (I’m looking at you cinnamon and rose blossom) make my eyes water. If you decide to give the gift of candlelight, choose something very mild or unscented. And please, no gel candles or candles-in-a-jar or candles modeled into the shape of an apple.

10. Ho-Ho – LCBO Gift Cards. The same logic for the coffee gift applies here. Kids. ALL DAY. The only difference is that while coffee may be consumed during school hours, a glass of pinot is best reserved for 3:01 pm.

All kidding aside, the best gift you can give a teacher is your cooperation. Work with them to make your child’s school experience the best it can be. A sincere compliment here and there is pretty great too. Tell them how much your child is learning in their class or share some positive feedback from your child about their teacher. It means a lot.

Top Ten Gifts for the Health Nut

By Carrie Burrows

Giving fitness gifts to your loved ones is a great way to support them in achieving their fitness goals and showing that you are behind them! Fitness gifts can be inexpensive and really useful right up to, “OMG I need to get a loan!”

Stay away from the later…usually the most expensive gifts end up being oversized dust collectors and clothing racks. I’ve found that the simple and easiest to use are the gifts that are really where the bang for the buck is.

Oh, and guys, be very careful about buying a gym membership for your loved one without some serious thought and discussion. You need to be sure that your loved one is actually looking for that. If she isn’t, you could be sending a really strong message like, “I love you so much, but you need to hit the salad bar.”

Skipping Rope
Pound for pound, this is the queen of all fitness equipment. Nothing can touch the workout that a good session of skipping can provide for you. Cheap, portable and effective.
Best buy: Nylon or PVC cord, wood or plastic handles. $3 – $10

Pedometer
I really like being able to monitor my effort when I’m working out, but rarely are you results immediately evident. Pedometers are great for being able to see the results in real time, literally. They are very popular right now for corporate fitness group challenges.
Best buy: Look for one that has a memory program and will work in your pocket as well as on your hip. $10 – $50

Shoes
Need I say more?! Who doesn’t want a sweet pair of kicks! There is nothing worse than wearing a pair of shoes beyond their usefulness. They can damage your feet, knees and back. Most of us won’t but ourselves new shoes though until the old ones have had it! So give the gift of support.
Best buy: Comfort, size and support are the key. This is a tough one to buy blind, so if your loved one has a fav pair of shoes already, buy the same. $80 – $ 150

Stability Ball
Talk about functional! Need an extra chair in the house? Need a platform for supporting an exercise program? Stability balls are great for exercise and for fitness. I replaced my office chair a long time ago with a stability ball.
Best buy: Stay away from the brand names, you’ll be paying extra for a logo. Choose a ball that is right for the height of the receiver. The bigger the ball, the greater the price. $15 – $50

Tritan Water Bottle
A gift you give that lasts forever? That’s a gift that can be appreciated. Tritan water bottles are virtually indestructible, look good and don’t destroy the environment or your health like some other bottles on the market.
Best buy: Tritan, but any high quality bottle will do. Look for PBA (Bisphenol A) free, with a straw and water tight sealing lid. $3 – $10

Resistance Bands / Tubing
Most people don’t need much more than our own body weight for our resistance training, but when you need to add a little extra challenge, resistance bands or tubing are perfect for upping your game a little.
Best buy: Go for bands that have foam handles for comfort and choose a colour that is right (green = lightest resistance, black = heaviest) $5 – $20

Foam Roller
We all love a good massage but not all of us have the time or money to get out and see a professional. A foam roller isn’t going to ever replace an RMT, but it will certainly help massage out tired and sore muscles. Really want to kick it up a notch? Try a Rumble Roller!
Best buy: Look for durability and strength. Again, expensive here doesn’t mean better. Function and results are the best guide here. $20 – $80

Fitness Journal
A great way to track your performance in an exercise program is by writing it down. Have you bought yourself a fitness journal? Probably not so you can guess that whoever you are going to give one to doesn’t already have one! Journaling a fitness program can have significant impact on success!!
Best buy: There are many to choose from. Find one that is right for your loved one that will be used. Goals, workouts, meals, thoughts should all be included. $10 – $50

Magic Bullet
Smoothies, home made salsa, sauces and soups are all easy and healthy with a Magic Bullet. I’m on my third one in 5 years with at least twice a day use, so they are a great, durable, compact gift choice.
Best buy: Get the one shot: Canadian Tire, Walmart usually have the best prices. $40 – $100

YurBuds
There are very few things that can destroy your focus during a run or exercise than earbuds that hurt, fall out or just don’t perform well. YurBuds are awesome! They won’t let your earbuds fall out, they’re comfortable and they actually improve the sound quality of your tunes.
Best buy: Go to the manufacturers site to locate a retailer near you: https://www.yurbuds.com/

Yoga Mat
Who wants to lie on someone else’s mat or on a communal gym floor or mat that everyone else has dripped their sweat or lay down on? Not me cough germaphobe. Give a loved one a good quality yoga mat that provides some cushioning.
Best buy: 3.2 mm thick and 172 mm long. Thicker will provide more comfort but aren’t really necessary. Non-toxic materials and a great grip factor are key. The bigger and thicker, the heavier. $15 – $50

Top Ten Gifts for the Shutterbug

by Cherie-Lynn Buchanan

It’s no secret that I love Christmas and everything that it brings with it. Well, that’s not exactly true – I’m not a shopper in the least so for me my shopping list is like gold! I have also been know to do all of my Christmas shopping online so I don’t have to go to the mall. Please don’t take my girl card away :)

OK so now that that is out of the way – Let’s talk camera stuff! Now that is something I can shop for.

Although I’m a Canon girl the brand is pure preference as the whole Canon/Nikon thing all comes down to what feels better in your hand.

So lets get started.

1) For the person that already has a DSLR – the nifty fifty is the perfect lens to take photos of the kids around the house or to photograph things for your blog. It’s light weight and really just great value. There aren’t many photographers that don’t carry this lens. The really great news there are different levels to it and the entry level one is fairly inexpensive and will garner great results.

2) On every photographers list – a lens coffee mug. Really there’s nothing else to say except this is just pure fun!

3) A Kelly Moore Bag! What is a Kelly Moore bag – It’s an awesome camera bag that looks like a designer purse. Us girls like pretty things and the plain black bags that you usually see just don’t cut it anymore. I have the 2 Sues in mustard and I don’t leave home without it. As an added bonus – It will also fit your iPad.

4) For the photographer with a point and shoot a water bottle tripod from Photojojo is pretty cool. With this they can actually be in some of the pictures.

5) A really cool iPhone case. My girlfriend bought me a bamboo case that looks looks like a camera that is just the coolest thing. This is also another one of my favourites. This one requires a little work from you but is super cool and your will get bonus points because you put the work in yourself.

6) A photography book or a set of books. I always recommend the Scott Kelby books. They are a really easy, straight to the point kind of read. There is tons of information and I guarantee that your gift receiver will be thrilled with these.

7) Lightroom 4 is a fantastic deal for $100. This program will let you keep your photographs organized and the bonus is that Lightroom also has photo editing capabilities to boot. The program is worth it’s weigh in gold. I’m not going to lie it’s not the easiest to learn so if this is on your gift list to might want to include a Lightroom 4 book with it. Note: Make sure it’s a Lightroom 4 book as there are significant changes between 3 & 4.

8) Those that know me know that I’m a huge promoter of “Don’t Let Your Kids Grow Up To Be Jpegs” So my next must have for the photographer on your list – a gift card from Canvas Pop. They are a great Canadian company based out of Ottawa and the quality of their canvases are incredible. Additional tip make sure to get them enough for a canvas no smaller than 16 X20. If your printing a canvas I always say the bigger the better.

9) Memory Cards. There isn’t  a photographer that I know that can’t use additional memory cards. There is always a constant discussion about what size. For me I hate running out of space so I buy big (32G) cards when possible.

10) If you have someone that truly wants to improve their photography buy them a proper flash. When proper flash technique is learned the sky is the limit with possibilities. If the budget doesn’t allow for a flash a video light or LED flash is also a great gift. Try Video Light.

I’ll be honest I think I have the best job ever and the fact that I get to take pictures for a living makes me giddy with excitement.

Here are a few little tidbits about me;

I am a self-diagnosed Cake Addict!
I love everything Apple!
I’m a Canon Girl!
I listen to a lot of Canadian music — Stan Rogers & Gordon Lightfoot are my favourites.
I love to travel and move making me a Gypsy at heart.
I am a complete lover Of life.
I’m also a big believer of – Don’t Let Your Kids Grow Up To Be Jpegs
